Schedule is Changing

The purpose of a visual
schedule is to visually show a student with autism what is occurring in
their day so they can transition easily from one activity to the next.
When students get older, their schedules may change as well. A student
who is in 5th grade may have his or her schedule written in their notebook,
while a young three year old student uses a large board with pictures.
Because of difficulties experienced by students with autism with any change,
it is important to prepare the student for a change in their schedule.
If the student uses picture icons on their schedule (i.e. icons from the
program Boardmaker), then the first step is to observe them matching words
with the pictures icons. Make the same picture icons that are one their
schedule (no words included) and make word cards that correspond to the
pictures. Place two pictures in front of the child and one word card.
Ask them to "match" to see if they can match the correct picture
with the correct word. Once the student matches every picture and word
correctly with 100% accuracy, change their picture icons on their schedule
by making the word on the icon larger and the picture smaller. The focus
is to emphasize the word on the icon. Do the "match" program
again over several trials in attempt for them to reach 100% accuracy again.
The next step is to collaborate with the team on developing the student's
"new" schedule. When that is decided, use a social story to
complete transition (see social story below). Read the story with the
child and show them their new schedule and how to use it. Also, it is
important to use positive reinforcement during this process, especially
when the student begins to use their new schedule. This should be an exciting
experience for the student and they need reassurance that this change
is okay.
