Tuning
In This portion of the newsletter will focus on the area of music. Many will atest to the powerful impact music can play in the lives of person's within the Autism Spectrum disorder. Whether it's used for calming reasons, as a tool for learning or a way of helping the child access routines, elements of music often can assist in the process. You will find numerous stories of how music has impacted the lives of children. Most of these stories or testimonies are simply an anecdotal account of that particular situation. There is very limited research on the use of music, or music therapy in working with children within the Autism Spectrum Disorder. I am a music therapist who has worked with a vast number of children in the full gamut of the spectrum. My experiences have mostly occurred within the educational setting over quite a number of years. I have used the many elements of music (rhythm, singing, instruments, movement) as a tool to address a large number of skill areas. Each month I hope to address different aspects of using music as well as provide resources for consideration. Most of what I will offer will be a culmination of my experiences. I fully understand that all children are different. I'm hoping that perhaps I can offer some suggestions or ideas that will merely get the wheels of creativity or possibilities going. I will welcome any requests of things to address in this (section or column?) or the sharing of information or resources that has been found helpful. You can send messages to me via the AAPC.
