Teaching Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders Using the Comprehensive
Autism Planning System (CAPS)
Presenter: Brenda Smith Myles, Ph.D.
This two-day workshop will present practical techniques for teaching
students with ASD that can be used in both general and special
education settings.A format for ensuring that strategies are in
place to meet the complex needs of students with ASD will also
be presented. This model, the Comprehensive Autism Planning System
(CAPS), meets the requirements of No Child Left Behind, Response
to Intervention, and evidence-based practices and can be used
with individuals ages preschool throughout adulthood. Video case
studies will be provided, and attendees will be given opportunities
to apply CAPS with students with ASD.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- Participants will be able to match evidence-based practices
to the needs of students with ASD.
- Participants will be able to develop a Comprehensive Autism
Planning System for individuals with ASD.
- Participants will be able to identify evidence-based structural
supports for individuals with ASD.
- Participants will be able to describe communication interventions.
- Participants will be able to name sensory interventions for
students with ASD that can be used across school and community
settings.
- Participants will be able to name academic modifications
for students with ASD across settings.
- Participants will be able to identify CAPS for elementary,
middle/high, and vocational settings.
- Participants will be able to identify the components of a
comprehensive plan for individuals with ASD that can be used
in a vocational setting.
Brenda Smith Myles, Ph.D.
Brenda Smith Myles, Ph.D., is the recipient of the 2004 Autism
Society of America's Outstanding Professional Award, ASA's 2002
Outstanding Literary Work Award, and the 2006 Princeton Fellowship
Award. She has made over 500 presentations nationally and internationally
and written more than 150 articles and books on ASD. Myles is
also on the executive boards of several organizations, including
the Organization for Autism Research. In addition, she was acknowledged
as the second most productive applied researcher in ASD in the
world from 1997 to 2004.
