Asperger
Syndrome and Sensory Issues by Brenda Smith Myles, Katherine Tapscott

Some
behaviors are problematic and interfere with work or play; others result
in successful interactions. What's the difference and how can we help
reduce or eliminate ineffective behaviors?
This welcome addition
to the Practical Solutions series by the Autism Asperger Publishing Company
uncovers the puzzling behaviors by children and youth with Asperger Syndrome
(AS) that have a sensory base and, therefore, are often difficult to pinpoint
and interpret. Written in a very reader-friendly style, the book covers
the impact of the sensory system on behavior, reviews formal and informal
assessment tools and offers an invaluable set of practical interventions
that can be used by parents and educators alike to help promote success
for children and youth with AS. The "sensory gang" - a set of clever icons
used throughout the book - helps the reader navigate between the senses.

WHAT PARENTS AND PROFESSIONALS ----
HAVE TO SAY
This
is the first book on the sensory issues in Asperger Syndrome that thoroughly
describes my child. My son's behaviors now have meaning after years of
puzzlement …

Asperger
Syndrome and Sensory Issues…is of great value not only to special education
teachers but every teacher. In addition, pediatricians and family physicians
will gain insight into the issues faced by patients, their families and
teachers.
Paul A. Byrne, M.D.
clinical professor of pediatrics, Medical College of Ohio
…The
"Sensory Gang" helps the reader to easily track the different components
of sensory input and gain valuable insights on matching an appropriate
intervention to the specific sensory issue. As one who has personal experience
with some of these sensory issues and who also works with people having
these problems, I highly recommend this text to anyone interested in learning
more about understanding and helping people with Asperger Syndrome.

doctoral student in special education with a concentration in autism at
