Rebekah Heinrichs
Becky
lives in the country in Southeast Michigan with her two teenage
children and husband, two Cardigan Welsh Corgis and a very
aloof cat. She earned a master's degree in parent/child nursing
from the University of Kentucky and worked as a registered
nurse for ten years before having children. Becky started
a new career direction earning a master's degree in special
education with a focus on autism spectrum disorders from the
University of Kansas (obviously a bias for states beginning
with the letter "K"). Becky works as an educational
specialist in autism spectrum disorders and bullying prevention.
She was inspired to write the book Perfect
Targets: Asperger Syndrome and Bullying: Practical Solutions
for Surviving the Social World through her work with
children and adolescents with AS and their parents. She also
received a "nudge" from her mentor, advisor, and
friend Dr. Brenda Smith Myles. Becky has worked as a trained
certified parent educator with the Parents As Teachers (PAT)
Program and is a trained community facilitator for the Adults
and Children Together (ACT) Against Violence Program, which
focuses on educating adults who work with or parent young
children about anger management, social problem solving, discipline,
and media literacy. Becky is a national presenter and facilitates
the Asperger
Information Website, which targets information to parents
and professionals about Asperger Syndrome, including issues
related to bullying. The Asperger Information Website includes
a newsletter, The
Target, and a discussion board, Asperger
Information Discussion Forum.
