Mindy Small
Mindy Small, M.A., Coordinator of Autism Services
and co-author of Everyday
Solutions: A Practical Guide for Families of Children with
Autism Spectrum Disorders for Herbert G. Birch Services,
Inc.
Ms. Small has a B.S. in Special Education and Early Childhood
Education from University of Hartford; an M.A., Special Education
from Columbia University Teachers College; and New York State
Certificate in School Administration and Supervision (SAS)
Ms. Small has been employed at Birch Services for 26 years.
Her career began as a classroom teacher at Birch's school-age
program. She has since served as an Educational Supervisor
and Assistant Principal prior to her current role as Coordinator
of Autism Services. Ms. Small was trained in the TEACCH method
of instruction for individuals with autism in 1993 by Division
TEACCH, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In her
current role as Coordinator she provides Birch's autism classrooms
with training, support, and consultation. For the past several
years she has also provided training and consultation to programs
throughout the Metropolitan area, including the New York City
Department of Education, The Shield Institute, Building Blocks
Preschool, The Maryhaven Center of Hope, The Hallen School,
AHRC, ACLD, as well as various BOCES programs. Ms. Small served
as co-facilitator for numerous parent support/education groups
at Birch's schools in 1998-2001. The content of these groups
has provided the foundation for her first publication Everyday
Solutions: A Practical Guide for Families of Children with
Autism Spectrum Disorder.
