Lisa A. Lieberman
Lisa
A. Lieberman received her Masters in Social Work in 1977 from
San Diego State. For 29 years, she has been a clinical social
worker doing psychotherapy in private practice. Earlier in
her career, she taught college courses at many schools in
such areas as The Psychology of Stress, Assertiveness, Positive
Parenting, and Effective Step-parenting.
Lisa married Craig Ackerson in 1979. He had custody of his
two children, Eden and Ryan who are now 35 and 33. They are
proud grandparents to Bella (3) and Jack (1). Lisa and Craigs
son, Jordan, is 18, a high school senior, and a delightful
young man with autism.
After Jordan was diagnosed in 1990, Lisa decided to specialize
in living with disability in the family. This was also based
on her experience as a sibling to a brother with schizophrenia,
a husband with an advanced case of multiple sclerosis, and
of course, as Jordans mom. She has been a popular speaker
at national conferences for many years on a variety of topics.
Her passion is helping parents learn to navigate the emotional
journey when parenting children with a disability.
She has published numerous articles, and recently published
a book with AAPC entitled A
Stranger Among Us. It is a comprehensive
guide to all aspects of hiring one-to-one providers for supporting
children and young adults with disabilities. She plans to
co-author a book with Jordan on his experiences as a student
with autism in high school.
