Dear Friends,
I'm writing to introduce my new book to you
- Life
with a Partner or Spouse with Asperger Syndrome:
Going over the Edge?
This is very much a personal story for me.
I have family members with Asperger Syndrome,
but at their request I am not acknowledging
who they are. In addition, I have counseled
many clients with Asperger Syndrome and their
spouses in my practice as a psychologist. The
characters in this book are real people but
disguised to protect their privacy.
I have over thirty years experience in private
practice with an emphasis on marriage and family
therapy. My orientation is social psychology
in that I assess individuals as members of interacting
systems such as family, work, neighborhood,
church and so on. Those with Asperger Syndrome
have a very unique way of interacting within
these various systems - especially with family.
I have written this book primarily to help
spouses/partners of those with Asperger Syndrome
who are living in difficult relationships learn
how to grow up and away from dysfunctional behavior
and dysfunctional relationships. If you find
yourself in such a marriage or relationship,
I hope you will see yourself in some of the
stories in this book and learn to open up to
a new way of conceiving of a relationship with
your Asperger loved ones.
Many Asperger Syndrome-neurotypical relationships
are so strained that the conflicts can escalate
to damaging proportions, involving divorce,
depression and even domestic violence. My attempt
is to bring these two worlds a bit closer in
hopes of making a lasting difference in the
happiness of many people.
Through this book you'll learn how to take
back your life, reinvent yourself and find love
again for yourself. That's the lesson. Only
then can you really be there for your Asperger
loved ones in return. I encourage you to take
the first step and take back your life.
I have received hundreds of emails from all
over the world from people who've responded
to just one chapter of this book that I posted
on my website. I hope you gain this kind of
excitement as you go through this book and begin
to believe that you can come alive again.
Best wishes,
Kathy J. Marshack, Ph.D.
