Becoming Adults, is an assistant professor in special
education at Lynchburg College in Lynchburg, Virginia, and
she teaches coursework for the autism certification program.
Previously, she conducted professional development training
at the University of Missouri at Kansas City on positive behavioral
supports and differentiated instruction and also was an autism
coordinator and consultant for the North Kansas City School
District in Kansas City, MO. She has worked with children
with special needs in medical and educational settings for
the past 30 years. In addition to publishing over 20 articles
in peer-reviewed journals, she has presented on autism and
Asperger Syndrome at over 75 conferences, including the National
Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and the Autism
Society of Americas (ASA) annual conventions. Dr. Barnhill
is on the NASP Expert Database for Asperger Syndrome and is
a Nationally Certified School Psychologist. Her research interests
include assessment and interventions for individuals with
Asperger Syndrome and the impact of autism spectrum disorders
on the family. As a parent of a 30-year-old son with Asperger
Syndrome, she knows how difficult school and work can be for
individuals with this disability. She and her husband, Press,
founded and facilitated the Northland Autism Spectrum Support
Group in Liberty, MO, for 5 ½ years. Dr. Barnhill has
also conducted social skills training groups and anger control
groups for students in her work as a school psychologist.
In her spare time, she enjoys traveling, reading, and spending
time with her family.
