The Kaleidoscope Kid
read excerpt

Dear AAPC Customer,

The Kaleidoscope Kid, my second book with the Autism Asperger Publishing Company, offers a kaleidoscope of insight into the numerous positive characteristics of many children on the autism spectrum. I wrote the book for my seven-year-old grandson Sam, who has Asperger Syndrome. He's an excellent, special, one-of-a-kind kid, and I wanted him to have a book reminding him of these traits.

Sam's creative nature and personality are as variable and colorful as the view through a kaleidoscope. I enjoy watching Sam develop and change as he grows. He's an absolute joy.

Other children on the autism spectrum may be surprised to know how many positives they share with Sam and similar children. And readers of all ages not on the spectrum will recognize that children with autism have many characteristics that make then fascinating, companionable classmates and friends.

I am hoping The Kaleidoscope Kid will remind readers that each child is unique in his own way, and that those on the autism spectrum have much to offer. Every child, with or without autism, has the potential for growth and a happy life. Sam's many gifts and those of other children with Asperger Syndrome or high-functioning autism are to be celebrated.

With Best Regards,
Elaine Marie Larson

Three AAPC books I suggest AAPC customers read. They enlightened me. I hope they do the same for you.

The Hidden Curriculum 2008 One-A-Day Calendar

The Hidden Curriculum 2008 One-A-Day Calendar: Items for Understanding Unstated Rules in Social Situations by Brenda Smith Myles with Megan Duncan

I recommend The Hidden Curriculum One-A-Day Calendar because it presents daily rules for living that are simple, helpful and appropriate for children with Asperger Syndrome, who do not automatically pick up social cues..

My Best Friend Will

My Best Friend Will
by Jamie Lowell and Tara Tuchel

I recommend My Best Friend Will because the simple story of the friendship between two fifth graders is written in sensitive language and presents the truth that Asperger Syndrome is a different way of being but sharing lots of similarities with other kinds of being. Beautiful black-and-white photos enhance this touching story.

My Book Full of Feelings

My Book Full of Feelings: How to Control and React to the SIZE of Your Emotions - An Interactive Workbook for Parents, Professionals & Children
by Amy V. Jaffe and Luci Gardner

I recommend My Book of Feelings because it helps children with Asperger Syndrome literally measure the size of their emotions and teaches them how to understand and respond appropriate to their own and others' feelings.

Excerpt from AAPC's most recent book of poems for children:

I Am Imaginative

Right at the top.
Is revealed
Whodunit
Unfortunately,
I stopped.
And at the top
Up the page
I wrote a mystery

"Up!
