Joanna
L. Keating-Velasco
Joanna
L. Keating-Velasco, B.S., enjoys trying to understand
the unique qualities of children with autism
and has worked as an instructional aide (independence
facilitator) for nine years in programs for
children, teens, and adults with autism and
other disabilities. She is the author of A
Is for Autism, F Is for Friend - A Kid's Book
on Making Friends with a Child Who Has Autism
and In
His Shoes - A Short Journey Through Autism.
She currently works in an adult transition program
for the Placentia Yorba Linda Unified School
District. Ms. Keating-Velasco delivers autism
awareness presentations to help others better
understand the challenges and unique qualities
of children on the autism spectrum.
Vita:
Ms.
Keating-Velasco's presentations are less academic
and are more community-based by making those
in schools, organizations and clubs more aware
of what autism is, how it presents and how they,
as a community, can be more welcoming to families
touched by autism. In her presentations, she
shares personal stories and tries to bring faces
to the rainbow of kids who present autism. Some
presentations include siblings, parents, grandparents
and individuals on the spectrum.
